Katy McClellan is a writer & director who is passionate about exploring contemporary culture through humor.
She started her career working for the BBC and Channel 4 on BAFTA-winning documentaries alongside Oscar-winning directors on films about social justice, music, and modern art. Before leaving the UK, she wrote and directed her first animated comedy series for All4, Susie Dent’s Guide to Swearing and since moving to America, she has delivered branded campaigns for Samsung, Givenchy, A+E, and Squarespace.
In 2021, she started production company, VERNA, with Executive Producer, Hannah Roodman. Through VERNA, Katy produced and assistant-directed queer rom-com, Jelly Bean, for which she and director, Nessa Norich, were nominated for a New Filmmakers Los Angeles Best Comedy Short Award.
As a writer and director, she develops her own slate of original concepts, including award-winning comedy pilots, short films, and satirical essays which she publishes on her Substack, tenpoundbaby.
The manuscript of her first novel, Hunk Town, USA, reached #8 in the Comedy Manuscripts category of Coverfly’s 2024 Red List. The previous year, her TV pilot IRL won an Honorable Mention in the Write LA Competition and reached the quarterfinals of Screencraft Writing Fellowship Awards. She is currently developing a feature documentary in Coriscana, Texas as well as podcast series, Harry Baby, a comedic exploration of millennial aging and the royal family.
